The Hean Herd of Pedigree Herefords

Historically the Estate Home Farm was a multi award winning dairy enterprise. However, in the Autumn of 2012, on the back of declining milk prices and a need for significant investment in order to maintain or increase the size of the herd, the difficult decision was made to sell off the dairy herd and move to a less intensive suckler beef system.

Hereford Cattle were selected to form the new herd for their ability to produce very high quality beef from a simple grass based diet, along with a reputation for a good temperament, being easy calving and good mothers.

The initial nucleus Hereford herd was formed with females from the nearby ‘Laxfield’, ‘Glenvale’ and ‘Studdolph’ Herds, who together with a stock bull ‘Studdolph 1 Topper’ have quickly become established on the Estate. Our first batch of Hereford calves were born in Spring 2014. Whilst still small in number it is the intention to develop the herd to fully utilise the available resources of the Estate Home Farm.

The Herd is registered with the Hereford Cattle Society, and is a member of Farm Assured Welsh Livestock (FAWL), demonstrating our commitment to high standards of animal welfare and husbandry. All the Cattle are routinely vaccinated for Leptospirosis and BVD.

Once the Cattle have been housed for the winter the farm is turned over to tack sheep, which come to us each year from upland farms in Carmarthenshire to help maintain the pastures.
