Gardener – Hean Castle

The Estate is seeking a full-time Gardener for the private gardens at Hean Castle.  The gardens extend to approximately 4 acres, and include a rose garden, herbaceous perennials, shrub borders and formal lawns, together with a large greenhouse and a walled fruit and vegetable garden that is being quietly restored.

The successful applicant will be expected to undertake all aspects of maintaining the gardens. They will have comprehensive plant knowledge and experience of most garden practices, and will be familiar with the operation of the usual garden machinery.

The position is for a ‘sole gardener’ working together with the owner.  The successful applicant will have extensive practical experience, and ideally RHS Level 2 qualification or similar.  The job will cover all aspects of gardening including, but not limited to, ground preparation, weeding, planting, pruning, some groundsman type duties, strimming, edging and cleaning the greenhouse.  Any relevant training certificates held will be advantageous, but a full driving licence is essential.

Although this is a ‘sole gardener’ position, help will be available from the wider Estate team to assist with mowing, hedge cutting and larger one-off projects as required.

Enthusiasm and a cheerful personality, an eye for detail and the ability to work on your own initiative are prerequisites together with a strong work ethic and organisational ability.  Exceptional references will be required.

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) permanent position, with occasional weekend working.  Remuneration will be competitive and dependent on experience.  The Estate operates a workplace pension scheme.
